The new building
The 50-year-old tropical greenhouse showed considerable damage due to old age and had to be replaced. The University of Basel is the responsible construction manager of a new tropical greenhouse (construction period: July 2019 to fall 2022). Thanks to contributions from benefactors, a cloud forest house will also be built and the visitor foyer will be completely renovated.
The new tropical greenhouse is being built on the foundation of the old one, so that the three-nave structure remains, but at the same time the greenhouse becomes higher. A completely new cloud forest house will be built for tropical mountain plants that require humid but cool conditions. The visitor foyer will be equipped with a large front facade and will also be used for events. Finally, the entrance area will be redesigned as an open meeting space. The new design was developed by the Basel architects Fistarol Sintzel Jacobs.
The finishing interior
For an optimal finishing of the tropical house and its surroundings, there was initially still a financial need, for example, for the construction of the new tropical pond, the construction of suitable presentation conditions for the titan arum (see more on the website of the Papiliorama Kerzers: http://titanwurz.com/), the integration of the orchid collection into the tropical house and, last but not least, for the plants. Without our generous and highly engaged donors and sponsors, we would not have been able to implement all plans.
