Now the next highlight is just around the corner! The titan arum will bloom at the end of the month. In the Botanical Garden’s Tropical House, the titan arum will be on display “right in the middle of the rainforest.”

It’s difficult to predict exactly when the flower will open; this can only be determined the evening before it blooms. The garden team expects the flower to open between July 24 and August 2.

The exact time when the flower will open will be posted on the Botanical Garden’s website the evening before, starting at 4:00 p.m.

On the evening of the blooming, the garden will be open to the public until 2:00 a.m. The titan arum is considered the tallest flower in the world, and its blooming cycle is one of the most spectacular events in the plant kingdom. The plant emits its distinctive odor only on the first night. The bloom itself lasts only about three days. Visitors can explore the tropical greenhouse at night on a loop trail, where they’ll learn fascinating facts about the plant and see smaller members of the same species.

Titan Arum: Current Snapshot

Visit one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world in the heart of the city of Basel.

The Botanical Garden of the University of Basel was founded in 1589 by Caspar Bauhin and is now located next to the Spalentor in the historic part of the city of Basel. In various greenhouses and outdoor area, the garden displays over 7,500 different plant species from all the important habitats of the earth.

The 2023 re-opened Tropical Greenhouse with the Cloud Forest Greenhouse - the only of its kind in Europe - offers a tropical experience in the heart of Basel.

The Basel titan arum will soon be blooming again. To mark this occasion, titan arum specialist Dr. Cyrille Claudel will give a lecture on the flower, whose botanical name is Amorphophallus titanum. It is also known as the corpse flower and is the most prominent representative of an extraordinary genus comprising approximately 250 species. Its gigantic inflorescences resemble carrion or manure and emit correspondingly unpleasant odors. Their spikes can heat themselves—all in the service of pollination by insects. But the leaves, too, are masters of deception and can mimic the shape of a tree.

Following a brief introduction to the arum family, the genus Amorphophallus will be presented in the context of current research findings.
