How to get there

Tram and Bus Lines

From the Basel SBB (Swiss) or Basel SNCF (French) railway station, take bus no. 30 in direction "Badischer Bahnhof". From the Basel Bad (German) railway station, take bus no. 30 in direction "Bahnhof SBB". Get off at the stop "Spalentor". You can see the entrance to the garden across the street looking in the direction of the bus line.

From Switzerland: Take highway A2 to Basel. After «Schweizerhalle», take the left lane and the «Basel West» exit. After exiting, follow the signs for «Universitätsspital» (University hospital). These signs lead you directly to the Spalentor from where you can see the garden. From Germany: highway exit N2/3 «Badischer Bahnhof». Follow the signs for «Universitätsspital».

Since the botanical garden is located on the fringe of the old town, there is almost no parking space on the streets. The hospital parking lot Parkhaus City is 5 minutes walking distance away, but is rather expensive. We recommend that you park your car on the periphery of the city and use public transport.

Food & Information

On Sundays from 11-17 h the Association Verein Botanscher Garten beim Spalentor offers healthy snacks, drinks and icecream as well as a lot of information about the botanical garden, plants and events in the "Gartestübli" located under the white tents next to the pond.

Garden Rules

Can I bring my dog to the Botanical Garden?

Dogs are not allowed in the Botanical Garden. An exception are of course assistance and companion dogs.

In the tropical greenhouse there was this special lizard, the basilisk, what happened to it?

Due to the re-construction of the tropical greenhouse, the basilisc had to be moved to another greenhouse. Unfortunately it is not possible to visit it there.

Is the garden accessible with a wheelchair?

There are two entrances for wheelchair users, one is located next to the Botanical Institute at Schönbeinstrasse and the other is close to the Spalentor tram station. Please note not all paths in the garden are accessible, some are too narrow and uneven. Not all the greenhouses can be accessed due to stairs.

We are eager to improve the accessability of the garden to enable everbody to visit it. In the course of the reconstruction of the tropical greenhouse there will also be a broader entrance area and the accessability for handicapped persons will improve.

Is the garden open on public holidays?

Yes, the garden is open every day of the year!

Is there a café or restaurant in the Botanical Garden or can we have a pick-nick?

Every Sunday there is a little info stall organized by the "Verein Botanischer Garten" which offers beverages and ice cream. There are several cafés and restaurants nearby in the area around Spalentor and also in the Kollegienhaus of the University of Basel.

You may bring your own food and have a pick-nick in the garden. Please be mindful of other visitors and recycle your waste.

What corona protection measures are in place in the botanical garden? What do I have to consider during my visit?

The Botanical Garden is open to visitors again. We kindly ask you to follow the rules of distance and the BAG guidelines. You can find out more about the protection concept here.

When can I visit the Tropical Greenhouse?

Where are the restrooms?

There are public restrooms opposite from the tram station Spalentor next to the Spalengraben garden entrance.
